General Description

Reporting directly to the President, the Director of Estimating will oversee preconstruction cost management, quantity take-offs, and competitive bid deliveries. The Director will serve as a key strategic partner across design, client, and project management teams to steer preconstruction strategy, refine pricing models, and support the company's long-term goals.

Essential Functions / Responsibilities

  • Department & Succession Leadership: Lead estimating workflows while mastering the firm's established operations during a structured transition period alongside retiring leadership.
  • Preconstruction & Strategic Input: Participate in project design and planning meetings, providing critical input on value engineering, phasing, and cost control.
  • Bid Preparation & Management: Oversee comprehensive bid processes—including quantity take-offs, scope evaluation, RFI issuance, and trade pricing—for both hard-bid and negotiated projects.
  • Subcontractor Collaboration: Cultivate and expand strong relationships with regional trade contractors and suppliers to ensure complete scope coverage and competitive pricing.
  • Project Hand-Off: Conduct structured turnover meetings with Project Managers and Field Superintendents to review bid documents, qualifications, and execution plans.
  • Estimating Systems Maintenance: Continually analyze historical cost data, update rate databases, and refine estimating tools to maintain market competitiveness.

Education and / or Experience

  • Significant experience leading or managing competitive construction estimating processes for commercial or light industrial projects.
  • Strong background in quantity take-offs, subcontractor bid evaluation, and value engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a close-knit, multi-disciplinary environment alongside executives, project managers, and trade partners.
  • Practical, solution-oriented mindset—valuing real-world construction knowledge, track record, and field awareness alongside formal background.
  • High level of professional integrity, self-direction, and interest in long-term career stability.
